Sample Expository Essay: Trump’s Embassy Move to Jerusalem

EssayExpository Essay

Former US President Donald Trump decided to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018. This decision became a trending issue that sparked multiple debates and discussions. The country of Israel and Palestine have been in continuous war over the ownership of the city of Jerusalem. Trump’s decision affected this conflict and created a gap in the already sensitive relationship between Muslim and Christian communities. Since August 1980, no country has built an embassy in Jerusalem due to legislation that banned diplomatic missions in the city (Landau, 2019). The US became the first country to establish an embassy in Jerusalem and recognized the city as Israel’s capital. In 2021, US President Joe Biden has stated that he will leave the US embassy in Jerusalem and that he supports the city of Israel (US to Keep Embassy in Jerusalem: Biden’s Top Diplomat, 2021). This will prolong the effects of the former president’s decision. Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem was a fulfillment of his presidential promise which resulted in religious, political, and economic issues that will affect the American people.

Former President Donald Trump moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem since it was one of his promises during his presidential campaign. With this promise, Trump earned the support of pro-Israel politicians, Conservative Christians, and Evangelical Christians. These groups supported the campaign due to their political and religious agenda. Christians view the city of Jerusalem as a significant place for their religion while pro-Israel politicians have their own political motives. The promise is one of the main reasons why the groups voted for Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

Trump’s relocation of the US embassy provoked a negative effect on Muslims and their beliefs. The decision created unnecessary tension between America and Islamic countries. With the embassy move, Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. More than 70% of Israel’s population are Jewish individuals. This means that the US supports the city of Jerusalem as a holy place for Jews. This situation could affect existing relationships between the US and Muslim countries as well as influence ongoing peace negotiations. In 2018, the Turkish President even considered cutting their relationship with the US. These broken relations could have adverse effects on America’s economy and the well-being of US citizens living in foreign countries. This is especially true for American citizens living in Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan (Wilhurst, 2017). Since current US President Joe Biden has no intention of retracting the US embassy from Jerusalem, the US may continue to jeopardize its relationships with foreign trade partners.

Former US President Trump’s decision of moving the embassy to Jerusalem shows his and America’s support for Israel. Palestine and Israel are fighting over Jerusalem since both countries view the city as a significant site for their religions. There have been existing peace negotiations between the two countries to settle the matter in a civilized way. However, Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem jeopardized these negotiations and agreements. The US gave Israel an advantage over Palestine after recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This led to political tensions which the international community even attempted to resolve. Still, Trump proceeded with moving the US embassy to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018.

America’s outright support for Israel angered the Palestinians and other Muslim countries. The embassy move resulted in various terror attacks from radical groups . Terror groups have disrupted the peace and become hostile towards the US and its citizens. Radical Muslims began to attack US citizens living in foreign countries as well as Christians in Jerusalem. This could result in serious international issues that will lead to more conflicts. King Abdulla of Jordan even warned Former President Trump that an embassy in Jerusalem can endanger the lives of US citizens (Al-khalidi, 2017). Terrorist groups could have also exploited the issue to spread their radical ideologies and recruit new members.

The US embassy in Jerusalem has caused an increase in violence around the region. Before the move, there have been multiple reports of shootings and killings around Mount Haram al-Sharif, a holy place for Muslims. The Jews, Christians, and Muslims living in Jerusalem may continue to engage in violent encounters unless both sides hear a reasonable solution to the ongoing issue between the two countries (Beauchamp, 2017). Trump’s decision to support Israel and establish an embassy in Jerusalem has caused more tension between the different ideologies. The move did not only affect the US but also the relationship between Christians and Muslim nations. This gap in their relationship can result in more radical and violent terrorist acts against each religion.

Trump’s decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem was a fulfillment of his presidential promise which resulted in religious, political, and economic issues that will affect the American people. The move had adverse effects on the relationships between the Jews, Christian, and Muslim communities. It created a gap between American and Muslim countries as well as endangering the well-being of US citizens living in foreign states. The embassy in Jerusalem has caused an increase in violence in Jerusalem and other Muslim countries. With the current US President keeping the embassy in Jerusalem, these issues will continue to affect the parties involved and can result in negative long-term effects.
