The debate surrounding the idea of marijuana from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act has been around for a quite some time now. This essentially points out that the drug will no longer be criminalized and would then take on the state of tobacco and alcohol - not illegal, but their abuse is highly discouraged. Like all things, there are advantages of both keeping it and removing it from Schedule 1. If we look closer, though, the benefits of keeping it as a Schedule 1 far outweigh the other side’s counter arguments. Here, we discuss these benefits in detail.

First, the choice of keeping marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug can help prevent the further widespread abuse of the drug. While the proponent for its removal continue to argue that marijuana possesses inherent medicinal value and may not be as harmful as we thought, there is still a high risk of abuse if finally made legal. Many people today suffer from the consequences of marijuana abuse, such as prosecution, which only shows that there is a huge probability that excessive abuse will be encouraged, especially among the youth. The problems associated with tobacco and alcohol abuse among the youth and the general population as a whole show the potential effects of such an action.

Secondly, an increase in societal issues such as crime, violence and health complications, will be avoided. These issues are directly influenced by drug abuse and removing marijuana from Schedule 1 will encourage heavy use among the public, including those who are currently not involved in marijuana use. As a direct impact, it may lead to a slight increase in the crime and violence rate in our society. This should be avoided at all costs.

Lastly, leaving the legalization of marijuana for individual states to decide will help protect those states that do not advocate for the use of the drug. Hence, instead of a blanket legalization for the whole country, only those that are strongly in support will have it legalized.

Overall, it is more beneficial to keep the dug listed as a Schedule 1 drug and allow individual states to decide on whether to legalize it. This will help prevent potential excessive abuse and other problems associated with this abuse such as crime and violence.
