Violence on T.V
American children watch an average of three to fours hours of television daily.
Television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Unfortunately, much of today's television programming is violent.
Hundreds of studies of the effects of T.V violence on children and teenagers have found that children may become "immune" to the horror of violence or gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems. This does not mean that violence on television is the only source for aggressive or violent behavior, but it is a significant contributor.
Here a some of my opinion about violence on T.V: reality versus fiction, what T.V shouldn t show and some ways to teach children. I ll finish it with a resume.
Reality versus Fiction:
I think that some cartoons may have negative effect on children, not to mention violent films. The problem with cartoons is that it violates the sense of reality. The action has no consequence. For example, in Tom and Jerry cartoons Jerry hits Tom. What happens? Nothing tragic! Tom will have little birds flying around his head for some seconds and that is it. But if a little girl hits her grandmother on the head to see if the little birds are going to fly around granny s head... I know for a fact that T.V does affect kids. But it could be in a positive way to. Parents just need to monitor what there kids watch. We must teach children to make the difference between reality and fiction, and not always blaming cartoon for the violence.
What T.V shouldn t show:
Few weeks ago I saw something on television that frighten me a lot on WWF. I saw a character by the name of Jerico beating up a woman for some stupid belt. The way he treated her on television and abused her was something that I did not expect to see. His anger and fury was that of a man beating up his wife. I wonder how many children are watching this show. You wonder why there is a lot of domestic violence. I know that a lot that happens on the show are suppose to be just show but to show a man beating up a woman and later showing her wounds is not proper of WWF. Children watching the show would believe it is alright to beat a woman to get what the male wants...I believe that children when they watch a movie and probably know that it is not real but to watch it on television in a family environment is something else... I think the WWF should be punish for this and fined and should set a better example... as parents of your children you have the power to correct this abuse...don t let the WWF show this kind of violence again...
Some ways to teach children:
T.V violence has been a big issue for many people. Parents complain that their children are becoming violent, rude and dangerous. Some parents have even feared their children, why? Because they don't have the power to turn off the T.V, or perhaps take away the remote? If your child is becoming to be very violent then do something. What you do at home will affect them, sure they will encounter the violent shows and video games but if you teach them that it is not proper to hurt someone because your mad at them and teach them to use their words or even walk away from the situation sometimes that is enough. If it becomes a serious problem there could be something else bothering them to cause them to lash out. Parent should try to understand the behavior of their children to have a better idea of the situation and the cause, to help them out.
I believe that by watching violence on television, a child is more likely to act out in a violent manner. However, I think that every child reacts differently to T.V violence. Just because it makes one child more aggressive does not mean that every child will react in the same way. Violence cannot be blamed upon anything but the violent person himself. There are many things in this world that can induce violence. We cannot accuse one violent source when there is a world full of many violent sources. Yes, Television can be one factor cause of violence, but there are many others to also look at. Therefore, it only makes sense that parents should take responsibility for what their young child watches. Only a parent knows what is appropriate for their child.
