Summary

In the essay "Smoking Is Bad For Everyone So It Should Be Illegal" the author

Sally Chen speaks of the problems with the governments involvement in the tobacco

industry and the problems with the selling of tobacco to children. Chen starts off by

pointing out the views of children who smoke, and the sense that smoking makes them

more refined. Although Chen also achnologes the fact that the children understand what

they are getting into, and the effects smoking has on them. Furthermore Chen shows the

attitude of the government, movie stars, and tobacco corporations toward their views

about the changing of the views that society should have toward tobacco. In explaining

the problems with the government and tobacco sales Chen indicates the reasons politicians

rise taxes on tobacco products, which in all creates an endless circle, helping them stay in

office longer. Chen even shows that the taxing of tobacco is a meaningless waste of

money, going toward the politicians favorite programs and does little to lower tobacco

sales. She also brings to light on how the laws and regulations forbidding the sales of

tobacco to minors are easily be surpassed by children. Furthermore Chen strongly

opposes the sales of tobacco and believes that tobacco should be outlawed and that there

should be an amendment set against it.
