Tobacco Products Must Be Illegal
By
How is it possible for something that kills so many people to be
legal in a country that boasts the supreme protection of it’s citizens?
Tobacco is literally destroying thousands of lives everyday, and all
attempts toward putting the tobacco problem to an end have been
unsuccessful. Something must be done effectively to stop the rapid
growth of tobacco abusers and victims. In the following paragraphs, I
will provide strong points of support which ultimately favor the
illegalization of tobacco in the U.S. I will first start with the lighter
side of the problem, which is the economic loss the individuals
endure.
Curiosity may arise from the statement of economic loss being
the lighter side of the problem, but considering the other possible
setbacks to be explained later, the loss of money should be of far less
concern. By pointing out the amount of money the American people
spend annually on tobacco products, it is possible to make apparent
the strong addiction taking toll through the use of tobacco. Tobacco
companies make around 1.4 and 1.9 trillion dollars a year. This is an
awful large amount of American money spent on something that in no
way promotes healthy living, but is rather damaging. Individuals
spend an absurd average of $900 a year on cigarettes, chewing
tobacco, cigars, snuff, and other tobacco products. It is sad to think
these addicted individuals could have a wonderful trip to Hawaii, but
instead, are involved and blinded by a filthy habit. It is quite
astonishing how much people are willing to pay for their use of
tobacco, but it is even more astonishing at what age many of these
tobacco users begin.
It is a fact, more than 3,000 kids begin smoking everyday in the
U.S. At this rate, there will be 1,095,000 new kids smoking a year. An
extremely large number of new smokers, which is actually larger
when considering the amount of adults who begin smoking. This is
just the statistics for smokers. Other tobacco users, such as people
who chew, add a good deal to the statistic of new tobacco users.
