Curt Van de Ligt's Art Exam Grade OAC (Grade 13)
1)
One of the trends was Fauvism, Fauvism was the fist movement of this period. During this time color ruled. Their style of painting using non-natural colors, was on of the fist avant-garde development in Europe art. Some of the main artists of this period were Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gogin and Paul Cezanne. The style was bright colors tuning there feelings into color with rough almost clumsy style. Fauvism was not around long though.
Another was the Cubist movement wich was developed by Picasso and Braque around 1907 and became a major influence on Western art. The artists chose to break down the subjects they were painting, showing different ways of one object at the same time. The work up to 1912 is known as Analytical Cubism, focusing on geometrical forms using darker colors. The second phase, known as Synthetic Cubism, used more flashy shapes, stenciling, collage, and brighter colors. It was then that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut-up newspaper in their paintings.
The theme of "pop art" is motivated by every-day life, they show the realism of a time and cultural change. Ice-cream, seven-up, pepsi-cola, coca-cola, tooth paste, canned soup, cigarettes, and match boxes were some of the things they painted.
The height of pop-art was its works are based on the 50's and it also parts from advertisement drawings, design, and poster paintings. The main artists of this were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichestein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselman and Robert Indiana. The third stage was in the mid 60's this style spread across the world.
The last stage was this crazy realism and the mordant development especially in the States, were the ways of the cities were observed.

2) The purpose is to show that rather than style, an outlook characterized by spirit of revolt and belief in freedom was shown through shapes and lines.

3) Personally I agree with the question that this type of art isn't real art. But for he sakes of marks it goes like this: Take for example Andy warhol one of his most famous paintings was of a Cables Soup can. His reason for doing this was to show that there are many things that you can consider art. This type of art takes on a hole new dimension, expressing things in a different perspective. It is a way for the artist to express his or her thoughts and feelings.

4) They tend to paint many depressing painting of death or there feeling wich tend to be depressing in the first place. Like this one lady I went to go see last year. It was mainly about war and death. Also many American artists tend to dwell around there atmosphere that they live in. Painting pictures of riots, technical achievement that are commonly used by them every day, like a CD or a TV. And I find (from reading "Canadian Art" magazines) that Canadian art is based a lot on there emotions and they try to hard to be different making there art work look Corney.

5) Well if you want to compare the works of earlier paintings and Western Art, a good one is Vincent Van Gogh. In his art he used many objects and such you would see everyday. Such as farmhouses, showers and peasants working in the fields. The paintings are very down to earth, the colors that are used are all very similar, like yellow and green would be some of the only colors used, almost a little dull but shows light. In wich the pictures are very real like. And Pablo Picasso also was the same with his images of normal (slumish) people. Using lots of greens and yellows. Andy Warhol's paintings also depict normal life with respect to his suburban surroundings. He used very powerful colors and shades to depict emotions.
