Skillful Means as a Result of Buddhism
Not unlike any other religion, Buddhism is unique and must be understood only by a broad sense or concepts. Buddhism can be better understood by knowing the importance of skillful means in its religion. Different schools of Buddhism are taught just as there are divisions in other religions such as Christianity. The most fascinating aspect of Buddhism to me is the Buddhist's devotion and willingness to lose his life (worldly things) to find their peace. As a Christian, I have respected their devotion and acts of faith. It saddens me of course though because it is my truth that they are not living for the right reason. If there were more Christians that were willing to completely serve and give for their believes life the Buddhists, God's kingdom would surly be increased.
A Buddhist will seek a life of selflessness. They will give up everything to live in a monastery for years just to become a better person. This is an act of skillful means. Skillful means are the things done out of faith of the believe in the Buddha and his teachings. A mean may be the act of spreading the religion of Buddhism. Through the application of the upaya by the Sangha, Buddhists are always at work developing new skills to reach a society or culture. Because of this it is a missionary religion, and its followers are unified in a corporate body due to the individuals same beliefs.
Knowing the art of skillful means gave me a much greater understanding of Buddhism. As a Christian, I am under the impression that faith without action is dead. Because of their dedication and devotion I admire the way in which they attempt to live their lives.
