In this present time, it is very hard to achieve anything as an individual. You will always need someone to agree or back you up in your own ideas. Although quite a few individual actions can be done, even thousands of years ago, you could only survive with other people. One example of this would be a religion.
In most religions there are professionals or higher administrators. These people are also known as priests, rabbis, bishops and so on. In Theravada Buddhism, they believe that it is organized only for the administrators. This means that the normal class people cannot be a real part of the religion. They only meditate alone and although being an individualist can strengthen yourself, it will not strengthen the religion I think that this is not a good way because religion should be open to everyone who would like to be a part of it.
In the Mahayana Buddhism, it is open to everyone. They practice mediation within groups and share their Nirvana among each other. This helps unite the community together and also opens up a space for those who are curious but do not know much about Buddhism. One of the most important things about religion is having a large community that is involved and true to it. If a religion was only for the administrators than people would not want to take the time because they would have to become a monk or nun which was not their idea of learning a religion.
There can be some positive affects with having administrators teaching the normal people about the religion because they have studied it their whole lives. This is a good way of using a community sharing information with each other because not only does it work but it also gets more people interested with the religion. I think that certain times it works when a religion can have is both individualism and communities. In a community people can share and teach but alone they can concentrate and pray.
Since there are so many different religions in the world today that have formed on their own or branched off of other main religions, they all have one thing in common: there is at least a community working together to celebrate with each other. There is no right or wrong way to live a religion and if you are following your morals than you are doing the right thing.
