Soren Kierkegaard

Soren Aabe Kierkegard was a Danish philosopher and religious thinker. He was born in Copenhagen on May 5, 1813. He was the youngest of 7 children. Kierkagaard had a disability that restricted him from playing with kids his own age. Because of this, he spent a lot of time with his father. His father was a clothes merchant, who became quite wealthy and retired. He held meetings at their home with professors from the University of Copenhagen, the university Kierkagaad would later attend. Kierkagaard and his father often went on imaginary trips to different places which later helped him in his thinking. At the University of Copenhagen, Kierkegaard studied theology. In 1840 Kirkegaard graduated and he proposed to Regine Olsen who was ten years younger. Soren followed his father s life and vision of him very closely. Soren s mother was his father s servant who he got pregnant and felt obligated to marry. Soren went through a tough time in his life while him and his father were not speaking. He often went on drinking sprees. One night he had too much to drink and he hired a prostiture. This made him realize he was unfit for marrage and broke up the engagment. He dedided to follow priesthood. He reconsiled with his father and soon after his father died. He moved to Berlin
