In the poem The Seafarer, translated by Burton Rafael, a man is telling hardships of the male, Anglo-Saxon life. In the period of time, that this poem takes place in, men were constantly on ships for war or travel. This middle-aged man looks old and haggard, who's quietness, faith in God, and enjoyment for new adventure has blanketed his loneliness.

…forth in sorrow and fear and pain,
Showed me suffering in a hundred ships,
In a thousand ports…
The above line can be used to determine that this sailor is in at least in his middle age, because the journeys that the Anglo-Saxons went on took a very long time. The man can be described as haggard looking or worn down, because the "smashing surf" and unpredictable weather had slowly taken its toll on him.

His faith in God is strongly supported in the second part of the poem. The sailor sees that
…the joys of God
Are fervent with life, where life itself
Fades quickly into the earth. The wealth
Of the world neither reaches to Heaven nor remains.
His faith gave him the belief that even though life was hard now, there was a reward at the end. The sailor enjoyed new adventures, because he tells
… how my heart
Would begin to beat, knowing once more
The salt waves tossing and the towering sea!
The time for journeys would come and my soul
Called for me eagerly out…

The sailor was very aware of his surroundings, by his vivid description of the "tossing and towering sea," and the emptiness that surrounded him. His loneliness is well documented throughout the poem by his descriptions of how, "frozen chains, and hardship groaned/ Around my heart," and how he was "alone in the world blown clear of love."

I really like this sailor, because he didn't let the harsh elements stop him from doing what he enjoyed doing the most, exploring new places. But I really feel sorry for the man, because he has to suffer through loneliness and his only hope was his faith in God.

Hello everyone. I like coincidences. They make me wonder about destiny, and whether free will is an illusion or just a matter of perspective. They let me speculate on the idea of some master plan that, from time to time, we're allowed to see out of the corner of our eye.
I am from Comoros and learning to write in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "This is same with a 2003 australia duct on the particulars against vibrator example."

Thank you very much 8-). Gavrie.
