In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Victor goes against the order of nature to create his monster. It is un-natural to bring the dead back to life, therefore Victor's monster is disorderly according to nature. Because of these circumstances both Victor and his monster are effected. Could they lead a normal life or were they both doomed from the start?
The things which set order in Victor's life are things such as the law, teachers, parents, friends, and other influences. All of these items try to set order by being involved with the person they are trying to help. They want Victor to lead a normal happy life, one where he does not hurt himself. The problem is that Victor is always running away from the people who are trying to help him. He does not want them around whether it is subconscious or deliberate. When Victor escapes the people who are providing him the voice of reason, he starts to do questionable things, like experimenting in the graveyard.
"Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil, as I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the grave, or tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay"? (p. 49)
If Victor was around the people and resources that would try to help him understand order, then he would realize that what he was doing is wrong. Victor kept doing what he wanted to do in the graveyard, with the dead bodies, possible because of the disorder of his mom passing away earlier in his life. Regardless, the more Victor was in solitude from the people who cared for him and could show him order, the more Victor traveled towards disorder.
When the monster was brought to life, nature was not on Victor's side. From the start Victor could not give the monster what nature could give a newborn, a caring and instinctive mother. Victor neglected the monster from day one, not teaching it the ways of life, making it feel unsure about itself. The monster was not taught the order of life, so it relied and acted on the disorder that it came from. The more the monster tried to get help from Victor, it's creator, the more Victor would run away.
"Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bed-chamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep" (p. 53)
The monster developed a complex, driving it more and more insane.
Because the monster was created from haste and there was not love or intimacy involved like nature intended, the monster was full of hate and acted upon its feelings.
" A flash of lightning illuminated the object, and discovered its shape plainly to me; its gigantic stature, and deformity of its aspect, more hideous then belongs to humanity, instantly informed me that is was the wretch, the filthy demon to whom I had given life." ( p.71)
This is what drove him to kill people without reason. Even when he tried to express to Victor that he needed companionship and love by requesting a mate, Victor only ignored him more, causing the monster to become more hurt and angry.
