The Hound
First, the Hound of the Baskervilles is a terrifying legend about the ancient owner of the Baskerville Hall, who was called Hugo. He fell in love with a girl who avoided meeting him because he had a bad reputation. One day, he abducted her and shut her up in his manor. One night, as he was drinking downstairs with his friends, the girl escaped. Hugo followed her across the moor and killed her. At that moment, a ferocious, horrific, supernatural hound rose and killed Hugo. From then on, all the Baskerville heirs who dared to walk on the moor at night were murdered in the same way.
This hound was a symbol of death and evil, that s why he terrified the inhabitants of Dartmoor.
In reality, this monstrous hound was a simple dog bought by Mr Stapleton . It was huge, indeed, but neither frightening nor dangerous. It didn t come from hell, but from London.Stapleton, who was a member of the Baskerville family, intended to use the legend in order to get rid of the other heirs on his way. Consequently, he resorted to some paint to make the dog look scary and he also starved it until it became restless and aggressiveThe hound was hidden on an island in the morass, in Grimpen Mire, which explains the anguished screams heard by the inhabitants and which contributed to keeping the legend alive !
In the end, Holmes and Watson shot the dog dead as it was threatening Sir Henry Baskerville s life.
