The novel, A Room With a View, written by E.M. Forster, recites a tedious story. The novel's elementary plot, and transparent characters are covered with the occasional usage of imagery.

A Room With a View, can be summed up into a few short sentences. Lucy, a female character has her choice of two suitors, Cecil and George. Cecil can provide Lucy with a life of monotony, however, he is quite handsome. George, a free thinker, would assist Lucy in the exploration of her own life and the world, however, he is less pleasing to the eye. This simplistic plot of a woman torn between two men is common, and acts as a challenge to the author to be extraordinarily creative to set the book apart from others with the same plot. Forster does not live up to the challenge.

Through his lack of character depth, Forster ensures that the reader will not become attached to the book. Stylistically, Forster used third person, this leaves the reader unattached to the characters and their feelings about the potential love triangle forming in their midst. Without the knowledge of the characters' thoughts, the reader soon becomes uninterested in the saga, since it is difficult to form a bond with someone one cannot thoroughly comprehend.

However, Forster adds a microscopic amount of color to the rather dull novel, through his imagery. For example, a scene in which he is describing a pianist and the classical piece she was playing, Forster writes, "her runs were not at all like a string of pearls." Another example of Forster's imagery, "A leaf, violently agitated, danced past her, while other leaves lay motionless." These passages helped the reader continue through the tedious book.

E.M. Forster's novel, A Room With a View, lacks many aspects of a worthwhile book, however Forster's imagery helps conceal the transparency of this novel.
