Hektor
Hektor had to become great by displaying his talents. It is plain and simple
that Hektor has more courage then anyone else in the poem. In one book Hektor, at
his own will, announces that he is ready to give his life for what he believes in. All
great men need courage for if they can't keep themselves organized, they can't keep
their followers organized. Hektor is betrayed worst of all by the gods but still
manages to follow his beliefs and do what he is instructed. When he led his troops
one way, you could be assured he wouldn't change his mind and go another
direction. Hektor is capable of always keeping a steady level of self-esteem. When
in battle with Achilles, realizing he will probably loose does not make Hektor fight
any less. A very important trait of Hektor is his dusting of arrogance. If you are in
doubt of yourself, you will go nowhere. Greatness comes with being sure of yourself
and that, Hektor displayed colorfully. Hektor once said he would challenged anyone
to a duel. Even if Achilles was the one who should have to fight, Hektor would have
followed through. Hektor also has something that men are either born with or will
not ever get, he has the power to attract followers. Something that all great men
have tells people that they want to listen. Most importantly, Hektor, when possible,
does his best to make peace. A man, no matter how great is nothing more than a
fool if he always wants war. Hektor proposed that he and Menelaus fight for Helen.
He was ready to risk his life to save thousands of others, this also showed his
greatness by wanting piece. Hektor, in every aspect was a great Trojan man. He
had no goddess to save him when he was in trouble, he fought for his life every day
of the war, two steps at a time.
