Throughout history society has gone through many drastic changes. People’s idea
of the “norm” or average is much different than it was in years past. Some things that
were important to people in the past mean almost nothing to the people of today’s world.
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the society that Twain creates is much different
than society of today in the year 2000.
In the time period that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written slavery
was legal and very common throughout the southern states. There were many racial slurs
used in the book referring to African Americans as “niggers”. When such words were
used it was accepted. Today, racial slurs are still around but are considered polically
incorrect and unacceptable and are not used as much. In our society today people can be
sued or put in jail for racial predujces.
Also, African Americans were not viewed as people, but as property. Jim, Miss
Watson’s slave, is suppose to be sold as if he were a product and not a person. They were
not permitted to learn to read or write in most cases in fear of the power they would gain
through education. Today, everyone has the same rights no matter their race or color.
There are public schools for everyone to attend and everone has a chance for an
education.
