Over View of Book The book that I am reading is a WWII book showing the struggles of a teen-age girl named Lisa living in Denmark and as the war is going on she is growing up. The author shows how life was in Denmark during the holocaust the author explains from great detail how the Jews in Denmark lived and in order to live there they formed a resistance group so the Nazis would not take them into concentration camps. As Lisa was growing up she realized that she had to help her nation stop the nazi from taking them into concentration camps and during that time Denmark was like a small bright light during the darkness of WWII because that was the only country that Jews weren t rounded up in concentration camps but soon they were going to, so that s why Lisa joined the resistance group with her brother passing leaflets on street cars to tell the real story of what s happening in the war and what the nazis are doing. One of the points of this book was to show how even teenagers like Lisa helped out in the resistance in Denmark against the Nazis. The points of view that were left out in the book were why the nazis never got full control of the Jews during holocaust and why the nazis even wanted to round up the Jews through out Europe. Through out the book the author was always supporting the Jews because the author is Jews so she was very bias towards the Jews. The reason I chose this book was because I always like learning about world war II from different points of views like teachers, television, internet magazines and in this case it was a book so that s why I chose it. Summary The story starts out in Copenhagen and the year is 1940. Lisa is twelve years old, and she is a bright high -spirited girl that describes her self as big boned and tough. Lisa and her family are awakened early one morning by the roar or warplanes coming from Germany to invade Denmark. Lisa describes her self as being quit and under standing just like her dad and big boned and tall and lanky like her mother, those descriptions are very important later on in the story because that s what helps her get by when she has trouble she imagines that her parents are with because of the characteristics she has so she cant put them down. During the holocaust the Nazis had rounded up almost all the Jewish communities through out Europe besides Denmark and Sweden. That s why the Jewish community in Denmark Lisa s brother is very upset by the invasion and he says that if the nazis destroy the last peace of light in Europe it s going to be all over for Denmark so Lisa s brother joined a resistance group against the nazis because he believed there was no way him and his family is going to get caught up. Later on Lisa gets involved in the resistance group with her brother and she goes in and distributes leaflets under the noses of nazi soldiers just to get the word out on how the war was really like and to describe how the nazis were cruel, Lisa came very close to getting caught but never did. Lisa says that s because of the way she is like her mom and dad and that s how she got her courage

To slip through the nazi. During the story Lisa s dad also joins the resistance group and his job was to secretly treat resistance members because he was a doctor. Lisa s life was very hard because she had to go through all these incidents during her teen-age years she also described every day life like at night every one had to close their curtains and turn off every single light in the city so when allied planes fly over they wouldn t see any one, another example was towards the end of the story when Lisa and her family made the choice to leave Denmark and to go to Sweden, they had to hide from SS soldiers all over the place and get on a boat to Sweden as soon as they got to Sweden they felt really safe because sweeten was a neutral country and the nazis haven t invaded it. Lisa s family was very lucky because as soon as they left the Nazis rounded up 400 of the 7000 Jews that lived there. Historical Importance This is not related to the topic of study right now but it was when we learned about WWII because that s what this book is about. This book is supposable historically accurate because it was a bunch of little stories and incidents of survivors of the holocaust that were put together to make this story. Critical Review This book showed how the life of the Jewish community in Denmark was during the holocaust and talked about how many Jews were saved from the nazi concentration camps by migrating to Sweden and also how the Jews had to kiss up to the SS while the Nazis invaded Denmark or else they would be arrested. Over all this book was not as critical as other books the other has written about this topic.
