Rommel was born November 15th 1891, christened Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel. His father was a local schoolmaster. He was the second son; the first was Manfred, who died in infancy. Rommel started school as the dreamy type but in adolescence greatly improved. His father died in 1913. He had 2 brothers and a sister, and was head of the household at 22 resulting from his father's death. He was born in Heidenheim. He joined the army because his father had briefly served in it as a lieutenant. Rommel tried to join his father's old regiment but was rejected. He tried for engineering and was rejected again. He was received into the Wurttemberg regiment and received an operation to correct a malfunctioning toe bone. He stayed in the army for 8 months and was promoted to sergeant. Later he went to officer's school and throughout World War I received various decorations and participated in many largely significant battles. During World War II he received command of the 7th Panzer Division. After successes in Europe, he went on to fight extremely successfully for almost 3 years in Africa. Afterwards, he helped greatly in the defense of Germany and the planning of the defense from the Allied landing (D-Day). He died October 15th, 1944
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was a very well known German general from World War II. He received a great deal of decorations and was the youngest field marshal during World War II, at 49. He was not the best general in the war, but his name instilled the most fear to Allied troops in Africa. His presence brought renewed hope and morale to those that he visited. The reason he was so famous, why there was a book written about him, is because of how he was known by the British generals. He was known as the 'decent German general' because his pastimes and style of command were the same as the British.
Rommel could be expressed as someone taken in by extremely convincing propaganda, fighting for his nation not knowing that it was committing wrong. He was an extension of an evil mind.
