South Carolina

South Carolina was one of the last colonies, although it held the first,

permident, English settlement, which was called Charleston. South Carolina had

many rich people settle there. There were many people that played a key part in

the colonization of South Carolina. Some of these include Joseph Blake, King

William, and Eliza Lucas. The South Carolina colony would not of been the

same without the help of these people.

Joseph Blake was a very honest governor. He began to force pirates pit

of the South Carolina Harbor. But the pirates did not give up easily. They

sneaked around the islands of the coast. Now they were no longer friends of the

Carolina traders.

King William established an act of grace in March of 1701. This act

offered pardons for all piracles commited before June 4, 1701, if the pirates

would surrender and take the oath if allegiance. Many of them decided to do

this. They gave up pirating and settled on the coast of South Carolina to make a

living trading. This was a great way of living for the pirates.

Eliza Lucas was a very important woman in colonial South Carolina. She

was the first cultivator fo the plant indigo. Eliza was especially interested in this

plant. It was brought to the colony fromt he West Indies. After she planted it,

she watched it grow for four months. The stalks were cut by the slaves and

carried to vats, which are tanks for holding objects. The vats were 16 square

feet, and 2 feet deep. Although there was a law that prohibited work on Sunday,

the changed it so that the indigo would have the proper care. Eliza raised

successfull crops for 3 years in a row. Later, indigo became a chief export.

There were a lot more people that were noted in the South Carolina

colony. Some did things that weren't mentioning, and others did things changed

the world. Later as time went on, South Carolina became the 8th state in the

United States
