"The only time you don't fail is the last time you try something and it works." Famous person William Strong once said this quote. Mr. Strong, when saying this quote, probably wasn't thinking about how closely his saying related to Nicaragua. His saying relates to Nicaragua because of all the changes they have made not only in their government but also in their people.
First of all, I would like to talk about is how Nicaragua got their independence. Spain had control over its colonies in the New World, including Nicaragua until it was threatened in the 1800's when the struggle for national independence went throughout the region. Spain became weak by the French invasion in 1794 but Spain still tried to keep a grasp on it's richest countries, which in return led to more neglect of its poor Central American territories. El Salvador staged a revolt in 1811 against Spanish rule because there was resentment between Spanish born elite and the Nicaraguan Creoles. After this revolt Spanish born elite were taken out and then replaced by the Creoles, when they wanted less overbearing laws. Even though Nicaragua officially refused to join this rebellion, they still had a uproar accrued. Soon, violence and political party competition broke out in all of Central American colonies during this chaotic decade. Nicaraguan independence came in stages. Beginning with the first one in 1821 when the Captaincy General of Guatemala declared his countries independence from Spain on September 15, which is still even celebrated to this very day. At first, the general was part of the Mexican Empire under the reign of General Agustin de Sturbide, but soon Mexico tried to control the regions, but they all resisted. Then they had had enough and five of the United Provinces of Central America, which were Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and of course Nicaragua, declared their independence on July of 1823. The other province had stayed with Mexico for various reasons. As for the other five, they were under very weak government, so each province created its own independent internal administration. Because of the inadequate communication and inside conflicts the five provinces were unable to institutionalize the federation, despite efforts, for the next fifteen years. When efforts to centralize power came it brought a civil war with it and that took place between 1826 to 1829. After the civil war the federation finally became extinct and a Constituent Assembly had formally declared Nicaragua's independence from the United Provinces of Central America on April 30, 1938. So, after all this fighting and hardship Nicaragua went through they finally had not gone through the hardest part. We take a look at its final hardship in 1984 when the institutionalization of the Revolution came about. In this period of time they established what a political party was and to put extremely briefly their economy went really low, kind of like the United State's great depression but only worse.
As we can see, Nicaragua has a long history and for us to cover all it is nearly impossible, however there are more aspects of Nicaragua that are even more interesting than its history.
The other areas in which I would like to talk about is about the country itself, for example the little things that no one every knows. Nicaragua is located 13 00 degrees North and 85 00 degrees West, which puts Nicaragua right smack in the middle of Honduras and Costa Rica. The area of Nicaragua is a grand total of 129, 494 square kilometers, which is slightly smaller than New York State. This large piece of land had a climate of tropical in its lowlands and cooler in the highlands.
Nicaragua is home to four million, three hundred, and ninety-nine. Out of all these peoples sixty nine percent is of the maestro, seventeen percent white, nine percent black, and five percent Amerindian. Out of all those cultures and people there are only two religions, with ninety five percent being Roman Catholic and the other five percent are Protestant. Nicaragua has a fair educational system, which they are currently working on. With fifty-five percent of its people not being able to read and write the government had to work on that. Nicaraguans are for surely going to have this one thing in common and that is their basic way of travel is by either paved or unpaved roads. Another thing that they all have in common is their life expectancy, which is approximately sixty-six years. Which compared to most countries is fairly high.
Nicaraguans are under the form of government known as a republic. Their legal system consists of a civil law system with a Supreme Court making the review for the administration acts. Nicaragua's official langue is Spanish. Nicaragua's government, as we can see pretty much just like any other country.
Nicaragua not only has an abundance of natural resources but they also share their wealth with the United States, Central America, Canada, and Germany. The countries that share the wealth with Nicaragua is Central America, United States, Venezuela, and Japan and also the some of the Western European nations. The natural resources that Nicaragua shares are gold, silver, copper, tungster, lead, zince, timber, and fish. However, the greatest threat to Nicaragua's natural resources is deforestation caused by the advancing agricultural frontier. The indigenous people living along the river valleys of the Bosawas area have maintained the forest area around them in relatively good condition for thousands of years, due to their traditional, low-impact use of natural resources. The natural resources that Nicaragua shares are gold, silver, copper, tungster, lead, zince, timber, and fish.
Even though Nicaragua trades with many different countries, it also has international disputes with two countries and they are Columbia and Honduras, over territorial space.
Nicaragua has three endangered species due to polluted water from factories and other such. The endangered species are tapri, harpy eagle, white tail pigeon, the blue whale, and the giant anteater.
Lastly, the Nicaraguan flag and symbol. The flag has three horizontal strips of blue, white, blue, in that very order with the national coat of arms featured in a triangle and around the circle are the words Republica De Nicaragua on the top portion and the bottom has the words El Salvador En La America Central. Secondly, the coat of arms is the symbol of Nicaragua.
In closing, as we saw from Mr. Strong, Nicaragua has continually changed and changed and hasn't failed yet because it is always trying. I personally have learned a lot about this country and am very glad I chose one with such interest, and I hope I have opened your eyes to a new Nicaragua.
