Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic novel by Jules Verne about an English gentleman by the name of Phileas Fogg. Fogg was quite an unusual and mysterious man. Nobody really knew very much about him. Everyone knew that he was wealthy, but, from where his wealth derived was not known. He had no job and belonged to no organization other than the Reform Club, which he went to everyday. He was very precise with his time. The activities of his days were unchanging. Everyday he would do the same thing at the same time. One day, he made an unusual wager--he wagered that he would complete a trip around the world in eighty days or give up his life's savings. This trip was the main plot of Verne's novel. Fogg's journey was intensified by the many obstacles which he faced. When comparing the novel and the movie, I didn't notice many differences. There were one or two along the way, but not really anything consequential. The only thing which seemed different to me was the amount of time and emphasis that was put into the separate scenes of each. I, personally, liked the movie better than the novel. Verne could have greatly improved his book by not putting so much time into insignificant parts. Without that setback, I don't think it would have been all that bad. Although this novel certainly couldn't be marked as a "page-turner", it did have an interesting story line and plot. If you enjoy reading about geography and have some spare time on your hands, Around the World in Eighty Days would be a great book for you to read.
