Violence can be defined as the abusive use of force. One sort or another of violence has affected every one of us or someone we know. Everyday, tens of children under age 20 are killed and many more are wounded by guns. Thousands and Millions cases of child abuse and neglect are reported annually. By the age of 18, young people will have viewed an estimated two hundred thousand acts of violence on television. There is violence in society because we are surrounded by violence and it may occur in our daily life through; domestic violence, school violence and television.
Firstly, for many, violence occurs right at their home and within their family. Domestic violence accounts for a large percentage of violence in North America. Battering, child abuse, and substance abuse are examples of domestic violence. Battering usually occurs when the husband beats up on the wife. This happens when the husband is having a bad day or when the husband comes home drunk and takes it all out on the wife, or the children. Child abuse is a very serious issue, this happens when the parents neglects the child or cause any physical or emotional harm intentionally to the child. There are many help lines set up from government for people to report to or for those that needs counseling. Also alcohol and drug abuse is present in many families. Alcoholism is about not having any choice when that drinks goes down. From then on alcohol controls the person's life and the only way out is abstinence or death. A full fifty percent of all domestic violence cases involve substance abuse and many child abuses cases involves a adult's alcohol or drug problem.
Secondly, the issue of school has been around for decades. Today the possibility that disagreement among students will be settled with some type of weapon rather than the old-fashioned fistfight. Many perceive that the major factors contributing to student violence are lack of parental supervision at home; certain type of parenting produce children whom contributes to school violence. Peer pressure is the most disturbing cause of acts of violence, because they will think that all their friends are doing it, why shouldn't they be doing it too. Moreover, bias is another factor to violence in school, this can happen due to their race, religion, or culture. Violence in school is rising significantly and it is important for communities to come up with solutions to solve the problems.
Lastly, violence on television can influence people to commit crime. Children watch an average of three to four hour of television daily. Television can be a powerful influence on their value and behavior. Unfortunately, much of today's television programs are violent. Children and teenagers may gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems and imitate the violence they observe on television. Extensive viewing of television violence by children or teenagers causes greater aggressiveness, they view shows in which violence is very realistic, and unpunished are more likely to imitate on what the see. The impact of television violence shall be evident in the near future.
In conclusion, violence occurs in our daily life through domestic violence, school violence and violence on television. Domestic violence includes child abuse, battering, and substance abuse. School violence can be due to peer pressure, bias, racism and lack of parental supervision. Finally we are exposed to violence on television and in movies, sadly, many of us witness real life violence too. Violence is a very serious issue in which everyone is concerned about. The government should toughen the laws to control the violence in our society.
