Martin Luther King changed the minds of many Americans in the 20th Century. I think that almost everything that we do today somehow relates to his thoughts and ideas. Just something as simple as being able to walk into a restaurant and placing an order is fulfilling his dream. The people that serve you are not concerned with the color of your skin, they are just worried about what you are going to order.
I think that America is really trying to make Martin Luther King's dream become a reality. Things like KKK rallies and such are keeping it from coming true. Another thing that is not helping is all the other wars in other countries about religion. To me that is pretty much the same as racism. You don't really know the person, but when you see what they look like or what religion they believe in, you hate them. I think that is what Martin Luther King wanted to fix about this country.
When King died in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, it was a sad time for this country. A non-violent leader that was against racism, had died in cold blood. A man named James Earl Ray had shot him while at a hotel. Now he is trying to say that he did not shoot Martin Luther King after pleading guilty to first degree murder and spending about 30 years in jail. Personally, I feel that is highly unlikely.
I think that if Martin Luther King was still alive today, he would not take all the credit. He would know that our country has changed drastically, though, and I would hope that he would take some credit for it. Just look around and see all the changes that he has made. For example, when you go get a drink from a water fountain, do you have to look and see whether it's the black or white drinking fountain? No you don't. Martin Luther King helped to get it so that everyone drank out of the same water fountain. Another example is when you go to get a bite to eat at a restaurant or snack place do you have to make sure it's a black or white restaurant? No, probably because of Martin Luther King.
To me, Martin Luther King stands out as an idea more than a person in history. He might have done a lot of great things as a person, but his ideas were the things that made him one of the most important people in the history of America, in my opinion. If he had not brought out those ideas to all Americans to see, then this country would not be where it is today, as a role model to other countries. When Martin Luther King said,"I have a Dream", I think that he was talking about having a prejudice-free world, and that we have a lot of work to do if we want to achieve that goal. My final opinion is that if everyone treats everyone equally, then we will have a nice world to live in.
