Human Nature
From The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
and The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg

Both The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg shows human
nature. One of the qualities of human nature is the fact that lying seems right at certain times even though it
isn't.
In The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg, most of the town started thinking how they could get the gold.
They did anything they could to get their hands on it. Mary Richards thought at first just to keep the gold and
burn the papers. Later, after her husband had taken the letter to be published, he tried to go back before it was too
late. He missed the train that came for the mail, which had stuff to be published in it. Both the Coxes and
Richardses were disappointed when they found this out. If it hadn't gone yet they could've split the money and no
one would've been the wiser. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn there are many times when it seems that
lying or stealing is okay. For example: when the Duke pretends to be Mary Jane's uncle. Another time is when
Huck justifies stealing if they limited some stuff.
Another quality of human nature is trying to get even. They show this in The Man that Corrupted
Hadleyburg. The man that got hurt wanted revenge on the town of Hadleyburg, because it was thought to be
such an honest and kind town. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the feud between the Grangerfields and
the Sheperdsons. The whole feud was at getting even with each other.
Loyalty and friendship was another quality of human nature. Huck has to choose which to be loyal to
when Mary Jane is packing to go to England and starts to cry. Huck decides to be loyal to Mary Jane and not the
Duke and the Dauphin. The story line of The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg is based on friendship although it
was just a plan to get even. The kindness of a stranger makes a friend.
These are just some of the many qualities of human nature that Mark Twain uses in these stories.
