Why Study Language?
Why study language? Many people wonder what the importance of language is. Language assists us to communicate with others. Communication allows us to convey our wishes and fulfill our basic needs. Language has evolved and become much more articulate, allowing humans to communicate their wishes to an elaborate degree.
Nonverbal language is the simplest and earliest form of communication used by any animal. In the essay Nonverbal Behavior: Culture, Gender, and the media, Teri Kwal Gamble and Michael W. Gamble explain that throughout our world nonverbal communication is used to assist people in self-expression (pg. 424). Spoken or written language is the way most people share their thoughts with others today. The better a person understands a language allows a person to communicate clearer.
Nonverbal communication allowed animals to convey their basic needs to each other. It is a widespread belief among scientists that the reason humans have evolved to a much more advanced level than other animals is because we have developed a superior form of communication. Mothers are able to identify their baby s needs or wishes just by their body language or sounds. This is the first correspondence a baby develops. The baby eventually develops better ways of communicating their needs as they learn them from their parents or guardians. The improved line of communication allows the baby s wishes to include more things than just it s basic needs.
Having evolved to where we are today, we are able to convey almost anything to another human with nearly unlimited articulation. Different languages and dialects have been developed all over the world as a result of human correspondence evolving. There are so many different languages and dialects today that it is difficult to communicate through spoken or written language with people from all different places. People who ve transplanted to another country that uses another language are limited in what they can do by their limited ability to communicate with the people around them. The United States of America is the biggest melting pot of any country on this planet. People must learn English in order for them to achieve a greater ability to communicate in this country. The better they know the English language, the easier it will be for them to fulfill their hopes and dreams. The majority of immigrants to this country find the language barrier to be the most difficult obstacle, yet the most powerful asset.
The reason we should study language is to increase our ability to communicate to a higher level. Language is important in any subject or field of interest. When your language is restricted, it in turn restricts your ability to improve different areas in your life. Limited language restricts your ability to gain knowledge from the schools teaching in the language, prevents you from getting a good job, as well as many other things. You free yourself from becoming restrained by learning the English language to a higher
degree. Malcolm X learned the English language to a higher level than he had known and expressed that he never felt so free in his life (pg. 55).
Language also allows you to think more coherently, because it gives you the words to describe your thoughts. The clearer your thinking process is the better you will be able to convey your thoughts to other people. In the essay Why Good English Is Good For You, John Simon makes a valid point saying, good speech develops good memory. (pg. 528) Our clearer thinking ability assists us in our memory capacity.
Malcolm X became increasingly frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to convey (pg. 54) As a result of his frustration he learned the language and was able to better convey his thoughts and feelings, as well as reach a much broader audience.
