In George Orwell's book Animal Farm, the thing that went wrong was that the animals gave up their freedom of choice and opinion to Napoleon. The reason he took control so quickly and easily is because the animals don't know how to be independent and after Jones was out of the picture. They looked for a new leader to guide then through the revolution and found the leaders in Napoleon and Snowball. The reason their society didn't work out is because the gave their freedom up to Napoleon and Snowball rather than think for themselves. The reason this was is because there was a divison of equality that showed that the pigs considered themselves better than the other animals. Because of the pigs supierority to the other animals, the pigs didn't think they have to obey the rules. There were 2 sets of rules between the pigs and animals. The pigs supervised the other animals while the other animals worked and the animals obey the commands the pigs gave them.

The pigs were clever and convinced the animals to let them be the leaders: "The pigs now reveled that during the past three months they had thought themselves to read and write from an old spelling book which had belong to Mr. Jones children and which had been thrown on the rubbish heap" (page 32). The pigs were motivated to have the rebellion survived. They knew they had to run the farm and hopefully better than Jones did. Only Snowball tried to educate the other animals but soon the pigs learned they could manipulate the other animals and get them to think that giving the pigs the apples and milk is a good thing. Snowball was clever and wanted a better life for the animals. This lead to argument between Napoleon and Snowball, cleaver and inventive pig.

Napoleon abused his power being the leader of the animals. Napoleon and Snowball never worked, they just stayed in the barn and instructed the other animals on what to do: "The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others." (page 35) The reason I think that the pigs didn't work is because they thought they were supiour to the other animals. Another example of abusive powers is that he change Snowball's image from a hero into an enemy: "Napoleon decreed that there should be a full investigation into Snowball's activities. With his dogs in attendance he set out and made a careful tour of inspection of the farm buildings the other animals following at a respectful distance" (Page 78). He abuses his power so that Snowball is made the scapegoat for everything that went wrong. Napoleon made the other animals so scared the animals confessed to things they didn't even do: "And so the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon's feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown there since the expulsion of Jones" (Page 83). The more and more power Napoleon gets the more the animals feared him and including death. As the animals feared Napoleon they had less and less equality.

The inequality happened soon after Jones left the farm. The pigs used Jones to get what they wanted from the animals. "Milk and apples contain substance absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brain works. The whole management and organization of this farm depended on us. Day and night we are watching over our well fare. It is for your sake that we drink the milk and eat these apples. Do you know what happens of we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back!" The pigs kept altering the commandments and some of the animals couldn't tell except Muriel who could partially read: "But a few days later Muriel, reading over the seven commandments to herself. Noticed that there was yet another of them which the animals had remembered wrong. They had thought the fifth commandment was "No animal shall drink alcohol," but there were two words that they had forgotten. Actually the commandments read: "No animals shall drink alcohol to excess" (page 103).

Napoleon and the other pigs in the beginning did a good job in getting the other animals to get a lot of hope in the revolution and the animalism idea. When Napoleon learned that the other animals couldn't read or write he decided to take advantage of them. In the worst conditions of Animal Farm Napoleon pushed the animals to work harder for the sake of the farm but really for him. Boxer is one of Napoleon's most faithful followers. Boxer pushed himself till death just for the windmill. Because of Napoleons greed and abusive power the farm was destroyed.
