Interpreting
Lord Of The Flies
Lord Of The Flies is a book in which many spectacular and interesting events
happen, like when Jack's group is trying to kill Ralph and the whole island sets on
fire. Every event requires a particular interpretation so that it be understood. These
are three distinctive diagnosis to the book. Sir William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
can be interpreted in many ways such as: socially, psychologically and religiously.
"Social" means, having to do with people that live together in organized
communities. This would be the most reasonable way to interpret the book because
the kids are trying to survive in an island as a group. There are two main factions in
the island. The gang that follows Jack and the group that follows Ralph. Jack's
assemblage likes to hunt, while Ralph's factions want's to be rescue. The conch
means a lot to the groups. It is a symbol of an organized civilization. The kids respect
the conch as if some adult person was talking to them. When the conch is broken in to
pieces it was as if the organized society the crowds had created would not longer exist
between them. This two parties would have problems just as all the other societies of
people around the world. While in the island the kids are killing them selves in many
social aspects, in the out side world they are having an atomic war that is going to
terminate human life on earth. This book would be better interpreted socially because
it is the way in which you would understand the book better.
By interpreting the book psychologically it is necessary to pay close attention to
the detail relating it the idea the book suggests. Roger's behavior in the rape scene
could be comprehended as a kid that would do anything just to have fun. Raping a pig
is not a very usual situation in this world. When Simon is talking with the pigs head (
Lord Of The Flies ) he perceive that the beast does not exists. He realize that the beast
is in their imaginations. He is the only one who can conceive this because he is the
most mature kid on the island. Robert throws rocks at the little boys but the rocks
never hit the little kids. Every day the rocks keep getting closer and closer to the kids
body. Robert knows that what he is doing is not a good thing but because there is no
grown ups in the island he does it any ways. The older kids have no respect for the
little kids. We know this because Jack said that they could use a little kid in the circle.
Jack does not care if the little kid dies because his group is going to have fun.
Psychological interpretation is a good idea for people with a mature mind that are
ready to hear to other peoples opinion.
Religious interpreting always have a good side and a bad side about a subject.
When you interpret a book with a religious point of view you would be letting many
aspects of the book pass by. Because religion has the philosophy that only the things
that are good or bad are important all the other aspects of the book would not have any
importance. The word Beelzebub and the Lord Of the Flies are very important to the
book. Both words are related to the devil. These words can give us an idea why the
kids behave the way they do on this book. There are two divergent characters in the
book. The kids are Simon and Jack. Simon is a very good person. He could be
compare with Jesus because of the things he does for the little kids. Jack would be the
anti-Christ of the story. Jack's group is the one that kills Simon ( Jesus ) and Jack is
always doing the things that he is not suppose to be doing. In a symbolic way you
could say that Jack has created his on religion. When he kills his first pig he takes the
bloody knife and passes it over his forehead. He is baptizing him self as a hunter. Then
he does the same thing to Robert. Religious interpreting can be useful if you also use
another kind of interpreting technique as well so that you don't let important things of
the book pass by.
Social, psychology an religion are the three main ways in which a book can be
understood. Social interpreting is a technique in which you can fully understand the
book. Psychological retention is a technique in which you can analyze the ideas of the
book more deeply and specifically than other diagnosis techniques. Religious perception
can help you conceive the points that need to be good or bad. By fusing this three
interpreting techniques you can appreciate and perceive a book.
