The Civil Rights Movement which developed between 1954 and 1968 did not magically appear. The war for civil rights dates all the way back to the first slave revolts during the colonial period. The conditions which developed the years after World War II were in fact developed over a long period of time. The Civil Rights Movement was at a peak from 1955-1965.Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting
Rights Act of 1965, guaranteeing basic civil rights for all Americans, regardless of race, after nearly a decade of nonviolent protests and marches, ranging from the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott to the student-led sit-ins of the 1960s to the huge March on Washington in 1963. During the 1960's several more radical changes occurred in the goals, strategies, and support for the movement for African American civil rights.Blacks of the 1960's wanted to achieve long overdue social, economic, and political rights. Along with these goals they wanted to define what exactly Black America was, and by wanting this they changed their stradegies of getting what they wanted by making a gutsy move for equal rights while gaining many new supporters by speaking out.
