The Amazing Animals and Plants
Lewis often went alone to collect plants and flowers. Many of those that he found in the territory were new species to him. Shortly after Council Bluff, he examined the beaver dam that he was very interested in. All of the plants and animals had interested him, and he was very happy with all the new species that he had found.
Clark was the official mapmaker, so everywhere that Lewis had found new species, Clark would draw the location of the species. Lewis was very fascinated in all the different kinds of animals. Private Joseph Field had shot a badger, which made Lewis's curiosity rise even higher. Lewis also shot a white pelican, and as an experiment, the men filled the mouth of the dead bird with five gallons of water. They were impressed with how much the pelican can hold in its pouch in the throat.
Prairie Dogs were also a new species that Lewis and Clark first saw in September. The men tried to dig them out of their burrows, but they couldn't, so they decided to drown them out. One of them came popping out, and the men grabbed it.
A Prairie Dog would live in a town that stretched for miles in the Plains. Their little heads would pop out then go back in as soon as they detected danger. One day, Lewis had also seen a goat, and a jackrabbit. As they went looking for more animals, they found a lot more. There were huge herds of buffalo, the Pronghorn antelope, fox, coyote, and wolves.
To conclude, throughout the journey through the territory, there were many new things that Lewis and Clark have not seen. Some examples would be Prairie Dogs, badgers, beavers, pelicans, antelope, buffalo, and so on. He had killed some of the species to bring back to President Jefferson, and he had stuffed them and everything. Therefore, Lewis and Clark have learned a lot already from the animals they have seen.
