Miles Dewey Davis was born on May 25, 1926.
Born in Illinois and raised in St. Lewis,
Miles Davis had an early fiscination with
music. He collected records of many famous
musicians and at age 13, he recieved a
trumpet. After devoting much of his time to
his music, he became a professional musician
at age 16. Soon after, Billy Eckstine's band
was touring through St. Lewis when their
Trumpet player became ill. Miles reluctantly
accepted his postion. After playing with
some of the best Jazz artists of the time,
Miles's experience was dramatically increased
more than all his years of practice combined.
After graduating high school, Miles Davis
enrolled in Juilliard College in September
1944. He majored in music, and was extreamly
deticated to his work. Music became an
obsession with him, as he increased his skills
as a player, and a writer.
When he finished college a few years later,
Miles continued his Jazz in a new band.
He soon took Jazz to a higher level with a
series of recordings called the Birth Of The
Cool during the late 1940's till 1950. He then
formed a new nine membered band and took off.
Later on, Miles Davis and Gil Evans created
new alliances between controversial Jazz
styles. After his style became out-of-date,
he traded in his Jazz-Swing styles for
something newer and growing in popularity,
Jazz-Rock. Rock was a new experience for
Miles. Many electronic instruments and new
equipment amazed him. He had many hits, but
along with the Rock influence, came drugs.
In 1975, at age 49, Miles Davis retired. He
was weakened by drugs, and was not too
healthy. 5 years later, when everyone thought
he was down for the count, Miles sprang back
into the music world with many new smash
hits.
During the 80's, Miles and other musical
giants of the time, entered the new phase of
music, which still lives on today. His new
"Pop" music put him on top.
In his late years, Miles returned to his old
style of Jazz. On September 28, 1991, at the
age of 65, Miles Dewey Davis died. In his
life, Miles had married 3 times, and had 3
sons and a daughter. Miles Davis was a very
important figure in our history, because he
shaped the way music is today.
