A scale is a proportion used in determining the dimensional relationship of a representation to that which it represents. The scale we used for building our house is 1 inch = 3 feet. When you use a scale, you are making an exact model of a thing except it is an exact smaller version of the figure. For instance, if you have a scale of 1:3, when you enlarged the figure three times it would the real size of the figure. Scales can be used for making house, boat, and etc. models.
When building a house you have to know a little bit about architecture. Architecture is the art and science of designing and erecting buildings. Knowing a little about architecture helps when you’re building certain parts: mitering the roof to fit, cutting and measuring sides, and cutting the angles to make the roof fit.
Mathematics was used in several things. We had to use slope for the roof. We had to use ratios and proportions when finding out the scale. We had to use rulers for measurements. These are just few of the many ways we used Mathematics in our math project.
We had to buy several materials to put our house together. We bought Styrofoam boards for the walls and roof. We bought sandpaper for the roof shingles. We bought a hot glue gun and glue sticks to keep the pieces together. We bought Popsicle sticks for the window molding.
I really had fun doing this project. The main reason we wanted to build a house was because we a built a house in seventh grade and really had fun. So, we thought it would be fun to make another one and see if ours was better this time.
