Periodic Element number eight on the modern periodic table of elements is known as Oxygen, and an atomic mass of 15.9994, while its most common oxidation number is -2. The melting point of oxygen is -218.4 degrees Celsius and the boiling point is -183 degrees Celsius. The origin of the name is Greek in nature. The Greek words oxus (acid) and gennan (generate) are combined to form the word Oxygen, a gas that's electronegitivity is 3.44. The symbol for oxygen is just "O," which is in group/column 6A and period 2. The Noble Gas Core short-hand method of naming the electron configuration of elements is as follows for Oxygen: [He]2s4 2p4. Oxygen is a non-metal, and is a diatomic element. At room temperature, oxygen is a clear, colorless, and tasteless gas. It has a density of 1.429 G/L at zero degrees celsius. Oxygen, which has a specific heat compacity of 0.92 Joules/(grams)*(degrees Celsius), has nine isotopes, while natural oxygen is a mixture of three isotopes. Natural occurring oxygen 18 is stable and available commercially. Probably the main commercial use of oxygen is in oxygen enrichment of steel blast furnaces. There are also a lot of use in large quantities of the gas in making synthesis gas for ammonia and methanol, ethylene oxide, and for oxy-acetylene welding. This is not the only uses of oxygen, these are just some of the large scale commercial uses of the gas where they have to pay for refined oxygen.
