Achilles is obviously moved by the relentless attacks on the Greeks by the Trojans. After all, the Greek soldiers are his friends. His ?beef? is with Agamemnon, not the soldiers. In order to deceive the Trojans into believing Achilles has returned to battle, Patroclus offers to put on Achilles? armor and fight in his stead. Patroclus is obviously frustrated by his friend?s exhausting grudge. Before Achilles agrees to this, he goes off on a tirade about losing his plunder and the injustice of it all.
This chapter and particularly Achilles? speech is a dramatic turning point in the story. For the first time, Achilles hints at returning to battle but only when things get so bad the Trojans have reached the sea and are about to attack the Greek ships.
In my opinion, by offering Patroclus his armor, Achilles bestows upon Patroclus not only the practical attire needed in battle but it is also as if Achilles is actually giving him a piece of himself and his heroism. As an interesting side note, it fascinates me that one?s armor, or at least that of Achilles, can be recognized so distinctly on the battlefield.
The last four lines seem to highlight Achilles? arrogance and selfishness by allowing so many soldiers to die. At the same time, we are reminded of Achilles? overwhelming sense of honor. He will attack the walls of Troy only when it is convenient for him - when he can maximize his glory. In addition to calling upon the gods to kill all Trojans, he goes so far as to suggest that all the Greeks except for Patroclus be killed also. Not only is he after glory, but Achilles wants ALL the glory. He may have included Patroclus in his speech solely because his friend was in the room.
