There were many events that lead up to the war of 1812. The French Revolution was a major event that caused confusion between France, Britain, and the United States. During the French Revolution, the Burgeoisie, or the middle class in France was fighting against the rich people in Britain. The United States have just gotten out of the American Revolution, and were not ready to go to another war. Therefore, we stayed neutral. Since France helped the United States during the American Revolution, Britain did not believe the fact that we were neutral and thought that we were helping France. Because of that, they were stopping our ships, stealing our cargo, and impressing the sailors. Britain did not want us to trade with France. In 1811, in the Northwest Territory, the Battle of Tippecanoe occurred. The Americans fought against the Indians. The Americans won the battle, but when they were looking through the dead bodies, the Americans noticed the weapons that the tribe was using. They were just like the British weapons. The Americans accused Britain of encouraging Chief Tecumseh to attack the settlers in the Northwest Territory, and supplying the tribe with weapons. Those events lead to the War of 1812.

There were many different opinions about the war throughout the country. The south favored the war and the north was against the war because businesses were hurt and jobs were lost.

During the war, there were many different battles throughout the country. America was defeated at many of the early battles, but we got stronger and stronger as the war progressed.

As a result of the war America got control of the Great Lakes. Britain was blockading the Atlantic Ocean. Because of that, the United States could not trade with other countries. The manufacturing and industry increased in the United States. Many buildings in Washington D.C were burned, including the Capitol and The White House. Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner" after he saw American troops defend Fort McHenry and defeat the British. Neither The United States nor Britain won the war of 1812, but by not losing the war, The United States preserved the freedom it had won from the Revolutionary War. A spirit of nationalism increased throughout the country where people loved the country and saw themselves more as Americans than citizens of individual states. European countries gained respect for The United States because such a new country did a good job during the war. The Federalist Party died as a result of the war.
