Drunk Driving is yet another risk factor that lurks on college campuses.

It is observed that the majority of underage students continue to drink alcohol despite drinking age laws. College alcohol use policies aimed at decreasing drinking opportunities on campuses may also have increased the likely hood that students will drink off campus. This change may place students at risk when returning to campus residents after consuming alcohol.

The NCADD (National Association Against Drunk Driving) did a study exploring the how college students were returning to on-campus housing after attending off-campus parties and visiting bars, and the extent to which they place themselves at risk for alcohol-related traffic fatalities.

The results conclude that that on any given weekend, one in 6 college students who attends a bar or a party away from their campus residence place themselves at risk for an alcohol related traffic fatality by either driving while intoxicated or riding with an intoxicated driver.

They note that males were more likely to become intoxicated and drive home while impaired. This causes problems for girls, considering that on a date the male usually drives.

I have experienced the harmful affects of drunk driving on a personal level when a drunken college student murdered my uncle. It was late afternoon and Uncle Greg was taking a jog along the side of the road when a drunk driver on his way home from happy hour hit him. He flew 15 feet into the air and was slammed on the ground, got up and took 2 steps in shock and fell dead to the ground.

If it weren’t for the carelessness of the driver my uncle would be alive today.

My message to you today is whenever you are drinking off campus PLEASE designate a driver for you own sake and the sake of innocent people like my uncle Greg.
